About the Department
Chairman
Helo and welcome to the website of the Department of Mathematics at Faculty of Science at Sohag University. I hope you will find all the information you need about the department, its goals, and its educational and research philosophy. Mathematics is considered one of the most important sciences that man has reached and developed through many human civilizations, which were concerned with the theories of this science, its development and benefit from it, starting from the Pharaonic civilization, passing through Greece, Indian and Islamic civilization, and then modern Western civilization.
Mathematics is the science that is concerned with the study of measurements, numbers, and what exists in space in terms of the movements of celestial bodies, planets, stars, and others complex or simple life.
The most important thing that we can benefit from through studying mathematics in our lives is access to logical thinking and access to argument and proof in solving various problems, whether these problems are complex scientific or simple life.
Also, mathematics overlaps in many sciences, as it serves many of them, such as chemistry, physics, space sciences, and others. The Department of Mathematics seeks to prepare a distinguished graduate in mathematics and statistics to suit the labor market in Egypt and the Arab world. The department also pays great attention in terms of research and support for local and international scientific publishing.

Background
Mathematics is the language of all times, and it is also the language of accuracy and brevity without mathematics and its branches, we would not have had a start in the field of progress and prosperity.
Also without it, we would not have been blessed with modern technologies and means of comfort and entertainment. Mathematics is an important science that no individual in society can do without it, whatever his culture or it was his age, and mathematics is the measure of progress and civilizations, the more it is used, the civilizations increase and flourish.
We use it in many things, in measuring, arranging, data of quantities, amounts, times, distances, sizes and weights, and the importance of mathematics appears in our lives as it helps the individual to organize his thoughts and make him the most capable one to Solve his problems, as mathematics enhances the positive behavioral aspects of his life.
The abstract nature of many mathematical concepts and ideas makes teaching and learning a process that requires great, honest and purposeful efforts. Therefore, we invite you, our dear students, to be among the builders of the nation and scholars of the era. I invite all of you to approach and enjoy the world of mathematics and to search the Internet and to be messengers of peace between mathematics and each other.
Allow us as teachers, to implore you to teach mathematics sincerely. Teach your students how to trust this science. They employ this science in their practical lives and thinking, and they take mathematics as an intellectual, scientific, practical approach in their lives, and they do not give up on that.
With the establishment of the Department of Mathematics in the academic year 1983/1984, the department was keen to provide opportunities for students to be properly established in order to achieve their aspirations and establish the basis for further development and independent thinking. There are future plans to devise distinguished programs in the fields of mathematics and statistics to serve the labor market, so the Statistics and Programming program (a special program for expenses) was added in the current academic year 2022/2023. The department also applies the credit hour system at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
The department is working on developing its educational programs in line with the scientific developments in the field of mathematics and its various applications so that it is compatible with the National Academic Reference Standards (NARS) in a way that qualifies the graduate to compete strongly in the labor market in various fields such as working in the academic field through different universities or research centers, working in the field of teaching students, creating programs and developing websites and web pages, working in companies and banks as a statistical analyst, working in statistical research centers.
In order to achieve the vision, mission, and goals, the undergraduate program in Mathematics was started, which was developed to ensure its quality and the quality of its outputs and to be distinguished, and we aspire to be the best at the local, regional and global levels. The college also grants a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, as well as a bachelor’s degree in (statistics and programming). It also grants a master’s degree in mathematics and a doctorate in philosophy in mathematics.
History of Mathematics
Mathematics has gone through many historical stations, and many human civilizations have contributed to its development throughout the ages, starting with the Babylonians and Egyptians, passing through the Greeks, Chinese and Indians, and ending with the important achievements of Muslims in this field, on which Europe later depended, in addition to Greek sciences mainly, Europe has worked in the eras of the Renaissance and the Scientific Revolution to provide many scientific achievements in general and mathematics in particular, which are still studied to the present time and are used in understanding and analyzing applied issues.
