For a student to be admitted to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the sciences, the following is required:
That the student has a master’s degree in science in the field of specialization from one of the faculties of science in Egyptian universities or any equivalent degree from another scientific institute recognized by the Supreme Council of Universities. Sciences from any scientific college or institute recognized by the Supreme Council of Universities.
To submit an application to the Department of Postgraduate Studies for enrollment and present the request to the concerned department council to determine the main supervisor, the supervision committee, the scope and plan of research, and theoretical courses, then present the matter – after completing all the documents – to the Postgraduate Studies Committee and then the College Council.
The student may be enrolled in a specialization other than the master’s specialization by imposing the necessary complementary courses determined by the scientific departments and with the approval of the College Council, provided that the student passes them before submitting the thesis.
The minimum for obtaining a PhD degree is two calendar years from the date of registration.
The maximum period for obtaining a doctoral degree is five Gregorian years from the date of registration, taking into account cases of suspension of enrollment. Registration may be extended by a maximum of two calendar years at the request of the supervisors and the approval of the concerned department council, the Postgraduate Studies and Research Committee, the College Council, and the University Postgraduate Studies Council.
The relevant department council, based on the request of the main supervisor, may specify courses for the student according to the list of courses (code 700), from which the student chooses according to the rules of the relevant department, with a maximum of 8 credit hours.
The relevant department council determines before the start of the study, based on the request of the main supervisor, the academic courses that are appropriate to the subject of the thesis.
The student passes the TOEFL exam in the English language with a minimum score of 500, or any other conditions approved by the university.
The number of credit hours for the courses is 8 credit hours, 52 credit hours are allocated for the thesis, and the total number of credit hours is 60 credit hours.
The main supervisor of the student determines the subject of the research and it is approved by the concerned department council and the college council. The student submits a letter with the results of the research so that it represents a new addition in the branches of specialization, taking into account the time periods stipulated in these regulations.
The relevant department council may, upon a request from the main supervisor, agree to amend the research topic only once during the doctoral study, and this may be done with or without changing the supervisors. This amendment shall be approved by the College and University Councils. If the modification is substantial, the student shall not be granted the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Science before the lapse of six months from the date of approval of the University Council.
The College Council cancels the student’s registration for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Science in the following cases:
The student is not eligible for scientific research based on three negative reports submitted by the student’s supervision committee after presenting them to the concerned department council and the Graduate Studies and Research Committee
He dropped out of his studies or was not serious about his research, with the approval of the concerned department council and the Postgraduate Studies and Research Committee, and based on a report from the supervisors after warning him three times
