Geology Department

Prof. Ayman Abdel Hamid

Head of Geology Department

On behalf of myself and on behalf of department staff members, their assistants, and employees of the Department of Geology, Faculty of Science, Sohag University, I welcome you to the department's website. The need of modern societies in the Arab Republic of Egypt for the various disciplines of geology, geophysics and geochemistry appears through their reliance on the availability of basic materials that serve the renaissance of these societies. The availability of these basic materials depends on the valuable efforts exerted by geologists and geophysicists in prospecting and careful search for the raw materials of these basic materials, such as petroleum, natural gas and their derivatives, which is the lifeblood of modern societies, as well as groundwater and important economic ores such as iron, uranium, copper, gold, silver, granite, sand, precious stones, minerals and other economic rocks. The Department of Geology at Faculty of Science, Sohag University, occupies a privileged place, due to the scientific research, books, references, and scientific consultations provided by staff members to serve the community and develop the environment, such as conducting ground surveys to detect groundwater and engineering surveys to determine the base layer and engineering conditions for construction sites, as well as geological consultations in the field of mines and quarries and flood problems and other consultations. Perhaps one of the most important things that the department offers to the community is that elite trained geologists and geophysicists who have bachelor’s degrees and other scientific degrees such as specialized diplomas, master’s degrees and doctorates from the department, and who occupy important positions in the country that God Almighty endowed with many natural resources. The academic degrees granted by the department, such as master’s and doctoral degrees, contribute to the active participation in providing various work sites in the country, such as ministries, government departments, companies, factories, and other entities which are related to advanced scientific and practical competencies needed in the fields of geology, geophysics, geochemistry, water geology, ore geology, stratigraphy, environmental geology and remote sensing. The department also continues to send a number of assistant staff members, including teaching assistants and assistant lecturers, to obtain scientific qualifications in various geology disciplines.

The Department of Geology aspires to be one of the centers of excellence in the field of earth sciences in general and geology in particular.

The Department of Geology is committed to preparing distinguished geologists armed with practical and general knowledge, concepts, and skills that enable them to perform their tasks efficiently and efficiently, and to able to conduct good scientific research, and have the desire to participate in the development of society and the protection of the environment.

The department is also committed to conducting research at a high level, with a focus on applied research, within the framework of the research plan of the department and the college, and in light of the university’s strategy for scientific research.

The department is also committed to actively participating in community service and environmental development within the college’s plan in this field.
