About the Department

Department Head’s Word

Zoology Department is one of the six pillars upon which Faculty of Science at Sohag University is built. The department specializes in various studies, encompassing all branches of biology except those related to botany. The department places great emphasis on the educational aspect of the student stage.
The department seeks to prepare highly qualified graduates who are well-versed in basic sciences and knowledge and who have the ability to comprehend and keep pace with rapid scientific changes at the regional and international levels.
The department also pays great attention to the research aspect and provides all possible and necessary research tools for researchers to conduct their research, especially young researchers, as well as motivating them to publish local and international scientific publications.

Prof. Hamdy Ahmed Mohamed Suleiman
Chairman of the Department Council

The Department of Zoology is one of the main leading departments in the college, as it was established with the establishment of the college in 1975.

The department aims to prepare generations of scholars and researchers in the various fields of zoology that are required by the labor market.

The department also plays an important and effective role in the development of civil society in the Sohag governorate by providing scientific and training services in the first era of the department, attention was devoted to teaching basic courses, in addition to taxonomic studies of vertebrates and invertebrates, comparative anatomy, embryology, comparative animal physiology, ecology and entomology.

With the development of zoology, the ramification of its branches, and its increasing reliance on other disciplines such as physics and chemistry, the innovation of modern technologies, and the trend towards environmental treatment, the teaching of animal science has evolved to include courses such as cellular genetics, molecular biology, experimental embryology, group genetics, immunology, parasitology, and marine and water biology. freshwater, biodiversity and other evolving branches of zoology.

The department periodically reviews the courses and includes modern ones in its courses, especially for postgraduate students and preliminary studies for a master’s degree. In addition to teaching basic sciences to science students

The department participates in teaching zoology courses to students of the Colleges of Education and Agriculture. The department has paid – since its inception – interest in studying the seas and conducting pioneering research in this field.

The officials of the department, together with the college administration, have thought of establishing a station for water research on the Red Sea, near the city of Al-Qusayr, far from urbanization and pollution, and work is underway to establish it.

The department also paid attention to studies in the field of inland waters, which included extensive studies in the field of the biology of Nile fish and aquatic invertebrates and the impact of the environment on them.

The Department of Zoology is keen to arrange scientific field trips for its students to visit one of the marine areas to carry out practical studies to identify marine life and study it in its natural environment.

Scientific Trips

  • The Department of Zoology organizes a scientific trip annually to the Red Sea region, and the students’ camp in the city of Al-Qusayr.
  • During the days of the trip, the students go to the sample collection areas in the north and south of the city.

They also watch the animal organisms that they studied during the four years of study in their natural environments and how they move in their environments.

They also collect samples of these organisms without prejudice to the environmental balance of these organisms for preservation and laboratory study
