About the Department
Chairman
Hello and welcome to the website of the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science, Sohag University. The Department of Physics is one of the oldest and oldest departments in the College of Science. Since its establishment, the Department of Physics has played an active role in raising the level of quality of education and scientific research and in serving the community, relying on a distinguished group of faculty members and the supporting staff representing all physics disciplines such as solid-state physics, nuclear and radiation physics, theoretical physics Materials Science Physics, Plasma Physics, Optical and Laser Physics.
The department seeks to develop itself with modern specializations such as nanomaterial, new energies physics, astrophysics, and bio-medical physics. The Department of Physics has a group of distinguished student laboratories, which number more than eleven, and contain the latest experiments and laboratory techniques. One of the most important features of the Department of Physics is the presence of a group of distinguished research laboratories that contain the latest devices and equipment, which contribute to the work of distinguished scientific research published in the largest international scientific journals, which are witnessed by everyone, and which play the main role in raising the status of the college, the university and our beloved country.

Background
The Department of Physics is one of the six departments included in the Faculty of Science in Sohag on the day it was established. It aimed to meet the needs of society in terms of physicists. Since then, it has been responsible for graduating and qualifying physicists that Sohag governorate needs in particular or the state needs in general in various institutions, including the university itself.
The Physics major is considered one of the main disciplines needed by the education sector as it enters into all aspects of practical and applied life. In recognition of the importance of the role of physics in understanding and developing the various branches of science and knowledge, the Department of Physics was established with the establishment of the College of Science in 1975 to play the desired role in teaching and scientific research. and community service.
The faculty members and their assistants in the Department of Physics reach 55 members on the job, representing most of the exact disciplines in physics, while the internally and externally seconded faculty members amount to 17 members, and the members of scholarships abroad to obtain master’s and doctoral degrees and scientific missions are 6 members.
The Department of Physics at the undergraduate level offered the Physics Program and the Physics and Chemistry Program and is currently in the process of approving the Biomedical Physics Program. The department teaches all departments of the College of Science, College of Education, College of Veterinary Medicine, College of Engineering, College of Technology and Education, College of Archeology and College of Computers and Information. The department contains 11 student laboratories equipped with the latest experiments, tools and equipment. The department strives to develop curricula, courses and laboratories, as well as relying on modern teaching and evaluation methods. The department also offers several master’s and doctoral programs such as solid-state physics, nuclear physics, theoretical physics, plasma physics and biophysics. The department contains 8 research laboratories.
The average of the research published during the year 2022 so far is more than 74 scientific research published in international peer-reviewed periodicals and in international publishing houses. Also, 5 master’s and doctoral dissertations were summarized during this year. 2 of the teachers in the department were promoted to the rank of assistant professor and 3 of the assistant professors to the rank of professor. And one of the members of the department was selected as a member of the permanent committee of physics for the promotion of professors and assistant professors for more than one session.
The department has developed a list of postgraduate studies to be based on the credit hours system. Many research programs have been offered at the master’s and doctoral levels, as well as offering more than one specialized diploma to meet the needs of the labor market.

Students applying for a diploma who do not have a Bachelor of Science in the required specialization may be admitted after they have passed qualifying courses in accordance with the requirements of the relevant department.
study duration
The duration of the study to obtain any of the postgraduate diplomas is an academic year during which the student devotes himself to theoretical and practical studies and exercises, and the number of credit hours allocated to any of the postgraduate diplomas is not less than 24 credit hours.
Academic Curricula
Before the start of the study, the concerned department council determines the courses that will be taught to the student during the academic year, from among the list of courses of code 500 according to the attached tables. Some courses of code 600 of the master’s degree may be studied. In all cases, these decisions are approved by the Vice Dean for Postgraduate Studies and Research and the College Council.
Courses are taught throughout the academic year and the student sits for the exam at the end of each semester in the courses he has studied.

Course Equivalency
The College Council may, based on the proposal of the Department Council and the recommendation of the Postgraduate Studies and Research Committee, calculate courses at the postgraduate level that the student has previously studied in the College or in any scientific institute recognized by the Supreme Council of Universities during the three years preceding his enrollment in the diploma.
Cancellation of registration
The enrollment of the diploma student is canceled if he does not obtain the diploma within six semesters (three years) from the date of enrollment, and the summer semester is not counted among the previous periods.
Master of science
Enrollment conditions :
Master of Science For a student to be enrolled in a master’s degree, the following conditions are required:

Colleges of science recognized by the Supreme Council of Universities. The Faculty Council may, after taking the opinion of the concerned department council, accept non-Egyptian students who have a bachelor’s degree in science from any college or scientific institute recognized by the Supreme Council of Universities with a general grade of acceptable or higher or its equivalent.
The student should devote himself to studying at least two days a week for a period of at least two years.
Students with at least a very good general grade (or equivalent) in the Bachelor of Science and Education and the Bachelor of Engineering may be admitted to the enrollment for a master’s degree in science, after clearing and successfully passing the complementary courses for two years that are determined by the scientific departments and with the approval of the College Council, or obtaining a diploma in the field of specialization with a general grade At least very good (or equivalent).
