About the Department
Department Head’s Word
On my own behalf and on behalf of my colleagues, staff members, their assistants, and employees of Geology Department, Faculty of Science, Sohag University, I welcome you to the department’s website. I hope that you will find on these pages the information you are looking for about the department, its goals, educational philosophy, and research activities.
The need of modern societies in the Arab Republic of Egypt for diverse specializations in geology, geophysics, and geochemistry is evident in their reliance on the availability of basic materials that serve the advancement of these societies. The availability of these basic materials depends on the valuable efforts of geologists and geophysicists in prospecting and accurately searching for the raw materials of these basic materials. Such as petroleum, natural gas and their derivatives, which are the lifeblood of modern societies, as well as groundwater and important economic raw materials such as iron, uranium, copper, gold, silver, granite, sand, precious stones, minerals and other economic rocks.
Department of Geology at Faculty of Science, Sohag University, occupies a distinguished position due to the scientific research, books, references and scientific consultations provided by the staff members to serve the community and develop the environment, such as conducting ground probes to detect groundwater and engineering probes to determine the base layer and engineering conditions for construction sites, as well as geological consultations in the field of mines, quarries and flood problems.
And other consultations. Perhaps the most important thing that the department provides to the community is the elite group of trained specialist geologists and geophysicists who hold bachelor’s degrees and other academic degrees such as specialized diplomas, master’s degrees and doctorates from the department and who hold important positions in the country that God Almighty has blessed with many natural resources.
The academic degrees granted by the department, such as the Master’s and Doctorate degrees, contribute to effective participation in providing various work sites in the country, such as ministries, government departments, companies, factories, and other relevant entities, with the advanced scientific and practical competencies required in the fields of geology, geophysics, geochemistry, hydrogeology, ore geology, stratigraphy, and environmental geology and Remote Sensing. The department also sends a number of staff, and assistant lecturers, to obtain academic qualifications in various geology specializations.
