The establishment of the faculty

Faculty of Science was established on December 5, 1974 by Ministerial Decree No. 774. Studies began in the academic year 1975/1976 as one of the faculties of Assiut University branch in Sohag. It then became one of the faculties of South Valley University after its establishment in 1996, until Sohag University gained independence in 2006, and it became one of the faculties of Sohag University. It is the first established faculty of the university and the third in the country to obtain accreditation from the National Authority for Quality Assurance and Accreditation of Education in July 2012

Faculty of Science comprises six academic departments: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany and Microbiology, and Geology. The duration of study at the faculty is four years. Based on the Faculty Council, Sohag University awards the following academic degrees

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in a single major, major, minor, or double major
  • A postgraduate diploma
  • A Master of Science degree

The faculty aims to:

  • Prepare general competencies specialized in various fields of basic sciences by providing research and training opportunities to gain research and applied expertise
  • Prepare a cadre of academic specialists in the fields of scientific and educational research to meet the needs of higher and university education and scientific research cent
  • Conducting scientific research in basic and applied sciences to keep pace with scientific developments and employing scientific research to serve industrial and development purposes
  • Continuously developing academic programs to raise the level of graduates capable of competing in the labor market, and providing community services and distinguished scientific consultations related to environmental and societal issues both at home and abroad
  • It engages in continuous training and improvement in the academic field to keep pace with scientific progress.
  • It cooperates with regional and international research centers in various research fields to prepare researchers with a distinguished applied mindset capable of producing modern technology, in addition to developing the college’s own resources
