About the Department

Chairman

Chairman’s Word

The Botany and Microbiology is one of the main disciplines required by the education sector, as it is included in all aspects of practical and applied life and as being aware about the importance of the role of botany and microbiology in understanding and developing the various branches of science and knowledge, botany department was established with the establishment of the faculty of Science in 1975 to play the desired role in teaching, scientific research and community service.

The department‘s name was changed to Botany and Microbiology Department so that the specialization includes microorganisms, Department of Botany (formerly), and Botany and Microbiology (currently) and it is one of the main departments at the faculty and aims to prepare generations of scholars and researchers in the various fields of botany and microbiology that are in line with the needs of the labor market.

Botany and Microbiology Department worked to enrich the educational system and contribute to raising the scientific and technological level in the fields of botany and microbiology in order to adapt with the challenges of our age by providing a distinguished educational level for many educational programs in the various faculties of Sohag University, which is reflected in the academic and skill level of graduates to meet the requirements of the practical market at the national and global levels.

At the beginning of the academic year 2020-2021 ,the department began the credit hours system, and it includes three programs, namely (botany and chemistry), (microbiology and chemistry), and (botany and microbiology).

The department provides the faculty with special undergraduate programs such as (Molecular Biotechnology) and (Microbiology and Medical Biochemistry – in partnership with the faculty of Medicine).

The department contains three student laboratories equipped with the latest experiments, microscopes, tools and equipment, and 9 groups and research laboratories to conduct research for postgraduate students and equipped with the latest scientific equipment.

The department seeks to develop curricula, courses, and laboratories, as well as to rely on modern teaching and assessment methods.

The department also offers several programs and diplomas at the master’s and doctoral levels, such as the Diploma in Applied Microbiology.

The department has introduced three new diploma programs, namely (Molecular Biotechnology Program), (Microbiology and Clinical Biochemistry) and (Environmental Sciences) Programs.

It has also developed a list of postgraduate studies to be based on the credit hours system, and several research programs will be offered at the master’s and doctoral levels, as well as offering more than one specialized diploma to meet the needs of the labor market.

in the department to serve the community and the surrounding environment

The Department of Botany and Microbiology has human capabilities, techniques and scientific equipment that enable it to participate effectively in serving the community and the surrounding environment through:

Central Laboratory of Genetic Engineering

The Central Laboratory for Genetic Engineering and Molecular Sciences analyzes biological samples at the molecular level by performing PCR and separating proteins with a number of specialized techniques such as Gel electrophoresis, DNA isolation, and many others, and providing all information related to these analyses.

The unit is considered one of the most important units at the level of the university and research centers in Sohag.

During the past year, a large number of samples were measured for various universities and institutes in the region, and many researchers were assisted in completing their research and scientific theses in various fields.

Tissue and plant cell culture laboratory

The Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory conducts research to improve the strains of some plants such as banana, jojoba, civetia, and others, through the use of modern technologies and devices.

Using tissue culture technology to produce plants that are more tolerant of environmental stressors such as salinity, drought, extreme heat, and others.
