Sohag University Microbial Culture Collection (SUMCC)
Sohag University Microbial Culture Collection (SUMCC) was established in 2016 at the Department of Botany and Microbiology, Faculty of Science, Sohag University to:
- Preserve microbial strains.
- Maintain herbarium materials of microbial strains.
- Provide microbial strains to students and researchers.
- Identify microbial strains.
- Organize workshops about isolation of microbes and how to preserve them.
SUMCC has 600 microbial strains that represent 89 microbial taxa that include: 55 fungal taxa isolated from freshwater habitats, 19 marine fungal taxa, 11 fungal taxa from terrestrial habitats, 3 bacterial species, 3 thraustochytrid species and one dinoflagellate species. Among the 89 microbial taxa at SUMCC, there are ex-type cultures of seven new species.
A total of 232 herbarium materials of microbial strains are preserved at SUMCC that include: 203 fungal and 29 myxogastria taxa. The fungal taxa include: 196 species from aquatic habitats (106 marine and 90 freshwater species) and 7 from terrestrial habitats. SUMCC has the largest herbarium collection of aquatic fungi in Egypt and the Middle East in general. Among the 232 microbial herbarium materials at SUCC, there are 16 holotype and 25 isotype materials of new genera and species described from Egypt, Japan and Saudi Arabia.
