A report on the organization of the Faculty of Science, Sohag University, a symposium on “Your happiness and health in planning your family”
This is within the framework of the initiative of the National Population Center at Sohag Governorate
Under the directives of His Excellency Prof. Dr. Mostafa Abdel-Khalek, President of Sohag University, and Prof. Dr. Khaled Omran, Vice President of the University for Community Service and Environmental Development, the Faculty of Science organized a symposium on “Your Happiness in Planning Your Family” within the framework of the National Population Center initiative – in Sohag Governorate, on the day of Tuesday, November 29, 2022. A number of Faculty members and their assistants and a large number of students participated in the symposium.
In the beginning, Prof. Dr. Alaa Yousry Mostafa, Vice Dean for The Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs, welcomed the attendees and introduced the participants, who are Prof. Wafaa Abu Sedira, Director of the National Population Council, and Hamdy Nadi, Deputy Director of the National Population Council in Sohag Governorate, and Sheikh Ibrahim Omar. Abdul Rahman, responsible for the family files in the Awqaf Directorate.
In his speech, Prof. Dr. Hazem Mahmoud Al-Mashnab, Dean of Science Faculty, welcomed the attendees, and thanked the university administration for sponsoring this event and honoring the Faculty of Science by hosting such important community seminars as they constitute a main focus in the vision of the Egyptian state. Prof. Dr. Hazem Mahmoud Al-Mashnab affirmed the Faculty’s constant keenness to host and organize these events, believing in the Faculty’s role in supporting civil society institutions within the basic tasks of the community service sector and environmental development in the Faculty.
Then the activities of the symposium began, which included a speech by Mr. Wafaa Abu Sedira, Director of the National Population Council in Sohag, in which she dealt with:
• Introducing the National Population Council
• Functions of the National Population Council.
• Definition of the population problem.
• Dimensions of the population problem and its effects at the local and national levels.
Then the interlocutors of the executive plan for the population of Sohag Governorate were discussed, which were as follows:
1) The interlocutor of reproductive health services and family planning.
2) The interlocutor of youth and adolescents
3) The interlocutor of education
4) The interlocutor of knowledge and community awareness
5) The interlocutor of empowering women
Then this was followed by a speech from Sheikh / Ibrahim Omar Abdel Rahman – responsible for the family file in the Awqaf Directorate, in which he dealt with many issues related to family planning, including, the difference in the concept between birth control and birth control in Islamic law, the issue of female circumcision and its prohibition according to Egyptian law and the extent to which this is compatible with Islamic law, And defeat the arguments and misconceptions of this issue. As well as the issue of premature marriage, explaining the appropriate age for marriage according to Sharia and Egyptian law, and the danger of early marriage to Egyptian families and society.
At the end of the symposium, a scientific lecture was presented by Prof. Dr. Tito Habib, Professor of Genetics and Molecular Biology, Department of Zoology, in which he explained the importance of genetic analyzes for those intending to marry in order to avoid many genetic diseases and the role of genes in challenging these diseases and issues related to consanguineous marriage.
In the end, the opinions of those present were listened to, and their questions and inquiries were answered.
